Resolution Point was founded to provide mediation, arbitration, resolution consultation and group facilitation services.
Resolution Point’s president, Dan Burk, is an attorney licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1981 and the District of Columbia since 1984. A Virginia Supreme Court certified mediator, Mr. Burk has been able to help clients and lawyers find better results than what happens with a completely adversarial process.
Mr. Burk has mediated and arbitrated cases in the following subject areas among others:
- Family matters (separation, divorce, custody, support)
- Computer software and Internet development
- Va. DMV franchise disputes
- Intellectual property rights
- Business operations
- Construction and land ownership
- Landlord and tenant
- Automobile accident, injury and insurance
- Consumer credit
Mr. Burk is Virginia Supreme Court certified as a family and civil court mediator and a mentor for other mediators. He has his "Certificate In Commercial Mediation" and "Certificate in Family Mediation" from the Northern Virginia Mediation Service and is on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Mediation Network.
After taking specialized advanced courses and exams about the specialized financial issues involved in divorce matters, Mr. Burk received the title of Certified Divorce Financial Analyst™.

Mr. Burk was also the founder, owner and President of Compass Computer Services, Inc. from 1987 until he sold Compass in 2000. He has extensive first-hand experience with technology issues, as well as day-to-day business operations. He managed all technical, financial and administrative aspects of this computer and telecommunications consulting firm. Technical services he provided and for which he managed others included:
- Selection, acquisition and configuration of new micro and minicomputers, local area networks, wide area networks and telephone systems.
- New software application design, development and implementation.
- Systems integration.
- Hardware and software troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Planning for computer and telecommunication needs in new office space.
- Planning and implementing equipment relocations associated with office moves.
Mr. Burk received his JD cum laude from Cornell Law School in 1981. In over 25 years of legal practice, he has assisted clients with computer and telecommunications issues, including employment, intellectual property rights and software distribution issues. He also provided consultation on computer crimes (he authored the 1984 Virginia Computer Crimes Act), as well as extensive real estate and land use issues. Mr. Burk received his Bachelor of Arts in Government (with an emphasis on computer programming and modeling) from Cornell University in 1979.
In addition to his alternative dispute resolution work, Mr. Burk has been very active in the community:
- Substitute teacher and volunteer in school clinics.
- Treasurer of local Girl Scout troop and computer coordinator for local swim team.
- Coach, school coordinator and Regional Treasurer for Odyssey of the Mind program.
- Treasurer of homeowners’ association.
- Volunteer sailing instructor for disadvantaged children and adults.
Mr. Burk is also an FAA-licensed pilot with both commercial and instrument ratings.

Our Services/Fees
Mediation is generally much less expensive than most alternatives. After an orientation session for which you pay a modest fixed amount, Resolution Point generally bills on an hourly basis and fees are split between the participants making the cost per party very reasonable. Rates vary by the number of participants. We also request reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses.

Our Ethical Responsibilities
Lawyers have an extensive set of ethical rules to follow including several specifically related to acting as a “neutral.”
In addition, mediators in Virginia have a separate set of ethical rules that govern their behavior. See Resources for specific ethical rules.
With Resolution Point’s services, you get the protection of the ethical obligations that apply to mediators and those that apply to lawyers.
